A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.
The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
