The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.
There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.
Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.
"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors at play, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.
The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.
He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.
Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
